Chapter 14

Exhausted nature is so tragic and suicidal

Oh how spectacular she is when she kills herself

Death throes are slowly crawling to her toes

As the last leaf is falling off her head

I ́m here with her undressed

From „Perennial” by Jinjer

WE WERE GIVEN A GIANT truck-turned-lab with state of the art equipment, all the scientists Bogdan worked with, and another small bus to fit the rest of the strigòns.

The four Humvees with a dozen of The Stand soldiers, plus a couple in each of our vehicles, including the bus we were driven in, was one of the terms Dmitar demanded. One of the others was that he himself accompanied us. We were not to be left unsupervised and we were given our weapons back, but only of the cold variety. Laser guns were confiscated while their soldiers carried firearms. Figures.

We were on our way towards Geneva the next day, after we were all given some time to get cleaned up and sleep on proper beds. Even though our rooms were with comfortable mattresses and pillows, the doors were locked. I was wrong and naive to think we would somehow be cooperating with The Stand, because all things considered, we were still their prisoners.

The strigòns never mentioned a thing. They took what we were given, sat complacently down in our respective vehicles, and quietly stared ahead with determination in their eyes.

I stumbled from the front of the bus where the soldiers with a driver sat quietly, machine guns resting against their legs. Trying to keep my balance as the bus bumped and jumped over obstacles on the road, I shuffled towards the back where I found Bana, Riva and Laszlo, flanked by Zzeph and The Giant. He was the only one that smiled at me. I sat on the seat opposite of Bana, Las and Riva, squeezing my way between Zzeph and The Giant, pushing them to give me space.

Zzeph growled but I ignored him, turning my back to him I offered my hand to The Giant.

“Hello, I’m Alex, what’s your name? I can’t call you The Giant in my head all the time.”

He cocked his head almost comically, watching my outstretched hand, then slowly lifted his, mimicking my pose. I reached forward, gripping his palm firmly and shook it.

“Now that we’ve learned how hands are shaken, you can tell me your name.”

He lifted his hazel-green eyes from our joined hands and gave me a dazzling, childish smile, “My name is Goor. Glad to… shake your hand, Miss Alex of Earth.”

I grinned and giggled at his benevolent tone, shaking his hand with both of mine. His English was accented but each word was pronounced with care.

“Likewise, Goor. Nice to officially meet you. Now tell me, why are your friends so grumpy?”

He looked at me blankly for a moment before throwing his head back with a throaty belly laughter that resonated throughout the bus. It almost hurt, the strength of that booming voice that came out of this gentle giant’s lips. It was so contagious I laughed with him.
